After an Illinois > Singapore > Illinois > Indiana childhood spent reading too many science fiction books and hiding from bullies, I joined the Army to pay for college. For six years I was a behavioral science combat medic (no combat), a great foundation for a journalist, maybe especially a political reporter ;)
I speak my mind in meetings. I have never followed a traditional path of continually rising responsibility and pay. I've spent a few years editing and leading, but I've been a writer and photographer for 17 years now. I love teaching and have volunteered a lot mentoring student journalists. I started my career during the 1992 presidential campaign. As a college editor, I blew a chance to ride in Dan Quayle's limo for an interview. Making up for that has probably subconsciously driven my entire career covering government.
Your mileage may vary.
I live with my girlfriend and her two kids. We have four dogs and a cat. I think I qualify as pretty outdoorsy. I have more than one bike, golf clubs, multiple tents, backpacks, a kayak, etc. I drive off-road desert Jeep tours occasionally on the side, because it's fun to tell tourists stories ... and drive Jeeps. None of our dogs will get in the pool, but Steve dipped his butt in the Black River while he was wading once.
Baby steps.
